The “three without”
Padova is popular for being the city of the “three without”:
“Saint without a name”, because Saint Antony, who his devotion is traditionally well-known, is commonly called “the Saint” for antonomasia, with a special reference to the homonymous Basilica.
“Cafè without doors”, because the monumental Caffè Pedrocchi, historic local cafè, was always open every hour of the day.
“Lawn without grass”, because Prato della Valle, spectacular “square”, the biggest one in Europe as someone says, used to be a marshland until the end of XVIII century (period when it got the current placing tanks to Andrea Memmo), where it used to take place the famous “Saint Fair” (“Fiera del Santo”), which became Trade Fair in 1919.
